Welcome to our New Board Members!

Four SCTE members will become part of the Iowa Heartland Chapter Board of Directors on January 1, 2024.

In the annual Board elections that concluded in early December, the following new members were elected to their first three-year term:

Joel Fini, Mediacom. Joel previously served as an Assistant Board Member
Justin Quinn, NewCom Technologies
Randy Chase, Mediacom

The following Board members were re-elected to new three-year terms:

Carl Norton, Mediacom
Mike Brems, Power & Tel
Francis Fourney

Mediacom Launches 10G Platform in West Des Moines

Mediacom Communications recently announced it has completed the transition of its West Des Moines network to the new 10G platform, which aims to achieve the symmetrical speeds of fiber on a cable network.

The 10G platform will allow Mediacom to scale from current speeds of 1 gigabit to 10 gigabits per second and beyond in the coming years, according to a press release. It will also close the bridge between download speeds and typically much slower upload speeds, which is used for video calling and streaming live video. In the affected areas, the company’s existing plans will get a boost in upload speeds without requiring any new infrastructure updates.

The next cities in Iowa to get 10G are Bertram, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Fairfax, Hiawatha and Marion.

2023 Trainings are a WRAP!

The Iowa Heartland Chapter wrapped up another busy year for technical trainings with our final training on December 6th and 7th. Attendance was good for our WiFi Fundamentals and Customer Expectations training, held on December 6th in Coralville and December 7th in Carroll.

We would like to extend a big THANK YOU to Western Iowa Networks, which hosted our latest training and has been a great host for the past several years. Also, the Coralville Public Library has become a regular stop on our training "tour", and we plan to be back at both locations in 2024.

Speaking of, do you have any ideas for trainings that would benefit you on the job? If so, we would love you to share your ideas with the Board during our planning meeting in January. Email Curtis Dean, [email protected] and thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Join us for Vendor Day and Cable-Tec Games!

Then event on the Iowa Heartland SCTE Chapter schedule is the RETURN of our annual Vendor Day, along with our 2023 edition of Cable-Tec Games, March 23, 2023 in Johnston!

The day begins at 8:30am at Stoney Creek Hotel with our Vendor Day! Anyone is welcome to attend and visit with our great vendors AT NO CHARGE! When you arrive you will check in, then spend whatever time you have visiting the vendor tables. We are expecting 20+ vendors this year, and they'd love to see you there!

The other big element of the day's activities is Cable-Tec Games! There is no cost to participate in the Games, but we do need you to register in advance. CLICK HERE to sign up

Iowa Heartland Board Officers for 2023

At their annual Board planning meeting on January 12, 2023 the Iowa Heartland Chapter Board of Directors selected officers for 2023.

Mike Brems with Power and Tel will continue to serve as chapter President. Carl Norton with Mediacom will remain as Vice-President. Eric Lage with Reinbeck Telecommunications Utility will serve as Secretary for 2023, and the new Chapter Treasurer is Francis Fortney with Wirewerks.

Brems and Lage will be term limited after 2023 so the Chapter will be seeking a new President and Secretary in 2024. If any SCTE members are interested in serving on the Board or in a leadership role, please contact Mike Brems, [email protected].

The Iowa Heartland Chapter Board would like to wish a Happy New Year to everyone in the telecommunications community in Iowa.

In 2022, the Board is hoping to bring more compelling training opportunities to everyone who is seeking to improve their skills and advance their career. We hope you'll join us for these training sessions throughout 2023.

We would also like to hear from YOU about what trainings and skills development would be most valuable to you and your collegues. We're always open to ideas that will be of value to you!

Iowa Heartland Welcomes New Board Members!

We'd like to extend a warm welcome to our newest Board members! During our annual Board election held earlier this month, SCTE members in Iowa elected Nathan Sidlinger and Charles Chapelle to their first two-year term on the Board. Both Nathan and Charles work at Mediacom. Board terms begin January 1st.

We also welcome back four returning Board members. Kirk Hauskins (ImOn) was elected to his second term; Eric Lage (Reinbeck Telecommunications Utility) will serve his 3rd term; Brenda Stottler (Teknetix) is entering her second term on the Board; and Josh Robinson (USA Communications), our outgoing Chapter Treasurer, will continue serving as a Board member for his 5th term.

The Board will be holding their annual organizational meeting on January 12th to elect officers for 2023 and to schedule trainings and meetings for the year.

Mark Your Calendars - 2023 Vendor Day

The Iowa Heartland Chapter is excited about the return of the Iowa Vendor Day on March 23, 2023! The event will be held at Stoney Creek Hotel in Johnston. This will be the first vendor day for our Chapter since before the COVID-19 outbreak.

We will be combining Vendor Day with one or more technical training sessions. Details and registration information on the technical training will be announced soon.

SCTE Regional Representatives

Call for Nominations
The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) is now accepting candidate nominations for the 9 Regional Representative seats that will work with the chapters & members in 2023- 2024. The responsibility of the Member-Elected Regional Representative is to support and represent the needs of the general membership and chapters through ideas and recommendations made to any Standing Committee within the society.
Eligibility: Candidates must be active SCTE members who have been members for at least the last three (3) years and reside within the Region they will represent. SCTE members may nominate themselves, or other candidates, by using the online nomination form.
Candidates interested in running for a Regional Representative seat should read the Roles and Responsibilities of the Regional Representatives prior to completing the nomination form.
Region 2 representative is currently open so soliciting nominations for the remaining year of that term. All other Regional Representatives are elected to a two-year term taking office on January 1, 2023.
The 9 regions up for nominations are:
Region 2 representing AZ, CO, MT, NM, UT, WY
Region 3 representing AK, ID, OR, WA
Region 4 representing OK, TX
Region 5 representing IA, IL, KS, MO, NE
Region 7 representing IN, MI, OH
Region 8 representing AL, AR, LA, MS, TN
Region 10 representing DC, KY, NC, VA, WV
Region 12 representing CT, MA, ME, NH, NY, RI, VT
Region representing CANADA
